Vehicles That Require More Than a G License

September 25, 2025

Most Ontario drivers feel confident once they’ve earned their G license. It’s the standard ticket to the road for cars, vans, and small trucks, and it covers the vast majority of day-to-day driving. But while your G may seem like the golden key, it doesn’t unlock every vehicle. From motorhomes and motorcycles to buses and big rigs, some vehicles demand more specialized knowledge, and the province requires specific licenses to ensure drivers can safely handle them.

But here’s the catch: your G license doesn’t give you the keys to everything on the road (or water). Larger, specialized, or commercial vehicles often require additional licensing. If you’re thinking about branching out into something bigger, here’s what you need to know.

Vehicles That Require More Than a G License

  • Tractor-Trailers: Require a Class A license to handle the weight and complexity.
  • Large Motorhomes: Need a Restricted Class A license, plus specialized insurance.
  • School Buses: Require a Class B or E license, depending on bus size.
  • Regular Buses: Drivers typically need a Class C license, or a Class F license for buses carrying 24 passengers or fewer.
  • Heavy Trucks (Over 11,000 kg): Require a Class D license.
  • Towing Over 4,600 kg: Also requires a Class D license, regardless of what vehicle is doing the towing.
  • Ambulances: Need a Class F license.
  • Motorcycles: Require a Class M license (M1 or M2 for learners). Insurance is handled separately from auto coverage.
  • Motorized Watercraft: A boating license is required if your craft has a motor. Canoes and kayaks? No license needed.
  • Vehicles with Air Brakes: Any vehicle with air brakes requires a Z endorsement on top of the necessary license.

The Bottom Line

Your G license gives you plenty of freedom on the road, but it isn’t a one-size-fits-all ticket. From motorcycles to buses to big rigs, Ontario has specialized licensing requirements to ensure drivers are properly trained and insured. Before upgrading your ride or your career, make sure you’ve got the right license in hand.
